An ethnoraid is an ethnographic method whereby researchers go into the field without prior notice to conduct brief on-the-spot interviews and observations. 




The ethnoraid is a type of analysis where spontaneity and a short time-frame are the keys. The method is especially suited to the start-up phase of a project, when there is a need for insights to help determine how to proceed. This is true for both quantitative and qualitative projects.

Moreover, ethnoraids provide an understanding of the cultural norms that prevail in a given context, which can in turn support the development of interview guides for in-depth interviews, observation guides and questionnaires.

It is also possible to use an open interview and observation guide developed previously. The time spent in the field is usually a few hours or a few days, depending on the project.


MEGAFON has, among other things, used ethnoraids for a barbecue survey, where we studied the barbecue habits of young people by taking a walk in the park on a summer evening, conducting brief interviews with young people and interviewing them on the spot.  



The Ethnoraid method is a quick and relatively cheap solution, but is not suitable for all projects.

It is a prerequisite that targets and guides are open and that the focus is on an area or a population group that is relatively easy to access. The method is ideal for projects relating to consumption and behaviour in public parks, insight into cycling culture, etc.
